Life at SoHM

New students welcome to the great School of Hygiene-Mbale (SoHM)! This information is meant to provide you with basic facts about SoHM, additional information can be found in the Admission Letter and or the School Rules and Regulations, copies of which are provided here in the website as downloads, they can also be obtained from the SoHMInquiries’ office (Reception), Academic Registrar’s Office and Warden’s Office.

Administrative Structures at the School.

The School is headed by the Principal and assisted by the Deputy Principal.

SoHM is driven by team spirit, and the following officers are always available to help the students at any time;

  • Academic Registrar- For admission, registration, and management of all student records.
  • Academic Staff (i.e. Tutors and Clinical Instructors) – For all academic guidance and support
  • School Accountant (s)- For all payments
  • Warden – For Accommodation, security and general welfare.
  • Library Staff- For Library issues
  • Medical Staff – For first aid treatment and counselling
  • Receptionist- For general information on SoHM Programmes and activities.
  • Support staff – For general guidance regarding the school


The School is located in Nkoma, Mbale behind Islamic University Uganda-Mbale Main campus, 1km off Mbale – Kumi Road from a junction which is 3km from Mbale town. Mbale town is found in Eastern region of Uganda which is about 225 Kms (or 4 hours) from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

Mbale Town is situated at the foothills of the Masaba Hills, which is part of the Mt. Elgon Mountain ranges. The school is located at the highest part of Mbale town.

Mbale town experiences both cool and dry weather conditions. Mbale is a town with all types of local foods found in Uganda. It also friendly people from different tribes but the majority being the Bagishu who are the local inhabitants of Bugisu-the local name given to this part of region.

New students and visitors are cautioned that Mbale-Kumi Road is part of the Northern great road (from Capetown to Cairo) is therefore a busy road. Students are advised to be careful when crossing this road.


SoHM is mostly a secure place but management recommends vigilance and information sharing where you detect problems.  Valuables should never be left unattended.

Accommodation and Meals

The school has both male and female students’ hostels with a total of 320 beds. All rooms are shared, there are no single rooms. All government admitted students reside inside the school. Some Private students and all Upgrading students are allowed to stay outside the School campus.

There is a canteen in which items of necessity like soap, toothpaste, slippers, Vaseline are available for sale. 

For meals, there is the Dining Hall located within the School complex. There is an approved menu that the catering department implements, no special meals are provided except those in the menu.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The School has a variety of Games and Sports, there are both Outdoor and Indoor games and Sports;

Outdoor Games and Sports include;

  • Football
  • Volleyball
  • Netball
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Sports such as; High Jump, Long Jump, Short put, Javelin, Marathon, Short Races,Relays, among others

Indoor Games and Sports;

  • Badminton
  • Chess
  • Draughts
  • Mweso
  • Solitaire


The Guild Entertainment and Culture Ministry runs a Television set which is fully subscribed to DSTV premier package for all channels.


A variety of places of worship are situated within the School and short distance (a range of 1 – 5 kms) from the School.  They include:

  • Main stream Christians Churches namely; Catholic Churches, and Anglican Churches.
  • Pentecostal churches namely; Pentecostal Assemblies of God, Deliverance Church, Seventh day Adventist Church, Presbyterian church among others.
  • Moslem Mosques
  • Hindu temples


SoHM has a Clinic run by two fulltime staff; a Clinical Officer and a Nurse who providefirst aid and basic treatment.  Major treatments are referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), a government hospital in Mbale town, However, there are other private clinical and hospitals.

Students with chronic medical cases/problems e.g. diabetes, chronic ulcers, high blood pressure etc. should notify the Medical Staff as soon as they report for effective management.  This is extremely important for your own good.


SoHM students are known for their highest level of professional and ethical discipline. Regular class attendance, academic participation, and smartnessare some of the aspects ofdiscipline. There are school rules and regulations which guide students’ discipline in SoHM
